MAK BUILD — Building Understanding, Inspiring Leadership & Diversity

Discover Construction

Construction is more than you think

Love creating worlds, growing things, solving puzzles or making plans? Your interests could connect with careers you haven't considered.

Construction needs people who design and build, and people who organise, communicate, buy and check. You don't need to know what you want to be yet.

Start with something you enjoy

A girl creating on a tablet, with blocks and a game-like world flowing into architectural models and a real building above.
01

Imagine it and design it

Love building worlds in Minecraft or making models?

Architects and designers turn ideas into places, planning how they look, work and feel.

A girl drawing in a sketchbook, with her artwork flowing upwards into a construction advertising billboard and brochure.
02

Draw it and share it

Always sketching, doodling or trying new colours?

Graphic designers and advertisers use images and words to help construction businesses explain their work and reach customers.

Two boys recording with microphones and a phone, with finished short-video posts about construction appearing above them.
03

Make your voice heard

Enjoy filming, editing or making videos with friends?

Marketing and communication teams create content that explains projects, shares useful information and helps people discover a business.

A boy selling priced handmade gifts at a clearly signed school-fair stall, linked to a construction-product showroom.
04

Find the right fit

Enjoy running a stall and explaining what you're selling?

Sales and business development teams help customers choose products and services, and build relationships that bring new work.

A boy planting flowers in a small raised bed, with the planting flowing into a landscaped outdoor space above.
05

Grow it and shape it

Enjoy planting, growing or planning a garden?

Landscape teams design, create and care for outdoor spaces, from school grounds and parks to gardens around new buildings.

A girl assembling a wooden model bridge, with the same structural idea developing into a full-size bridge above her.
06

Build it and test it

Ever built a model bridge and tested its strength?

Civil and structural engineers work out how bridges, buildings and other structures can stand up and work safely.

A boy organising school and hobby activities in a planner, with its coloured blocks flowing upwards into a construction schedule and building stages.
07

Plan what happens next

Like organising your timetable and fitting everything in?

Project planners use tools such as Gantt charts to show what happens when and keep project teams organised.

Two girls measuring shapes and solving sums facing the writer, with measured building plans, quantity take-off sheets and financial tables above.
08

Make the numbers count

Enjoy maths, measuring or comparing prices?

Quantity surveyors measure what a project needs and manage its costs. Accountancy and finance teams keep track of the money.

A boy adjusting a bicycle brake, with mechanical parts leading upwards into a building cutaway showing pipes, heating and ventilation.
09

Make it and keep it working

Enjoy fixing bikes or making things?

Tradespeople build, fit and repair. Building services and facilities teams keep spaces working, from heating to everyday maintenance.

A girl examining material samples, with her investigation leading upwards into building-joint checks, a window detail and an inspection checklist.
10

Look closer and ask why

Enjoy science experiments, checking measurements or investigating unexpected results?

Quality, safety and audit teams check work and records, investigate problems and help organisations improve.

These are starting points, not a test. You can enjoy several things, change your mind or explore something completely new.

Every project needs a whole team

Construction businesses also need people buying materials, organising drawings and meetings, supporting directors, managing offices and helping customers. Procurement, document control, project administration, PA and secretarial work, office management and complaints handling all have a place in the industry.

Curious to learn more

We're developing a book, practical workshops, talks and online learning to show what these jobs involve and how the roles work together.

Ask about the book and future learning

For schools and colleges

Help learners connect classroom subjects and everyday interests with real roles. We're developing age-appropriate talks and practical workshops, initially focused on Years 7 to 11. Schools and colleges are welcome to discuss their learners' interests and needs.

For young people and families
